Conservation Superheroes Bio Blitz
Location: Memorial University Botanical Garden

Please join us on Sunday, June 11 for a full day of conservation superhero fun! Sci-Fi on the Rock will be with us, and our education staff will be leading conservation hikes, providing introductory sessions to using the iNaturalist app, giving talks, and more. There will be conservation-themed crafts and a scavenger hunt.

Special Oceans Conservation Talk with Dr. Emilie Geissinger
Surviving winter: how temperature, food, and settlement timing affect juvenile Atlantic cod in their first year of life.
Bio: Emilie Geissinger completed her PhD at Memorial University in 2022. Emilie was part of the Biology and Ocean Sciences departments and focused on overwinter survival and site fidelity of juvenile Atlantic cod in the coastal zone. Emilie is currently a post-doctoral researcher with the Coastal and Freshwater Ecology section at Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

Conservation in Action Hike and Talk
Come on a walk with our education team to learn what we do here at the Garden to protect nature, and learn about some things you can do too! We will also be adding layers to one of our butterfly shelters, and learning how to build one!
Throughout the Day
iNaturalist Tutorials
Education staff will be on hand throughout the day with a display introducing the iNaturalist app, used widely in citizen science conservation activities. They will be able to show you how it works and provide instruction on how to set up an account and enter data. They'll even take you out for a short walk to get you started!
Crafts:
Conservation-themed crafts, including a pressed plants activity, a Puffin fortune teller craft, and egg carton reefs will be available for self-guided exploration and creativity.
