President’s Award for Outstanding Research

Congratulations to Biology's Dr. Eric VanderWal who was one of three individuals to receive the 2021 President’s Award for Outstanding Research (PAOR). The PAOR recognizes young researchers who have made outstanding contributions to their scholarly disciplines. 

Dr. Eric Vander Wal, associate professor, Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, is considered one of Canada’s experts in the ecology of large mammals.

Dr. Vander Wal initiated the Wildlife Evolutionary Ecology Lab, which has emerged as one of this country’s leading and most inclusive wildlife ecology teams.

Since joining the Biology Department Eric has received approximately $2.5 million in funding from University, Provincial and National sources.  In his research program at Memorial, Eric has trained 64 undergraduate research students, 19 graduate students and 5 postdoctoral fellows. 

Moreover, over 50% of his HQP’s have received tri-council funding and includes, as well, students who have received Vanier CGSs, Banting and NSERC postdoctoral fellowships. Two students have received Canadian Society of Ecology and Evolution PHD excellence awards for top theses in ecology and evolution.
