MUN Concrete Toboggan

MUN Concrete Toboggan is a racing vehicle design team. Every winter, we compete in the Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race (GNCTR), which is held in different provinces each year, and operates under the Engineering Student Design Hub (SDH). GNCTR is Canada’s oldest and largest engineering competition! MUN Concrete Toboggan currently has 6 major subteams: Steering, Breaking, Superstructure (main body of the vehicle), Concrete, Project Management, and Spirit. This variation in subteam types allows any member from any major to join and participate in our team activities, including attending competitions. Currently, we have members from the Faculties of Engineering, Business, and Data Science. We welcome more students from other majors!

Typical Volunteer Duties: We have a variety of member tasks that depend from one subteam to another. Some examples are included below:

i) Steering & Braking: Contribute to the design of the Steering and Braking System of the Toboggan vehicle. Help us make our S&B systems efficient!

ii) Superstructure: The main upper body of the toboggan, also known as Superstructure, needs to be strong and light for competitors to race down the hill during GNCTR. Members can contribute to the design and ideas using SolidWorks CAD models.

iii) Concrete: Members interested in this subteam may expect to make concrete mixes and efficient designs for the concrete skis of the toboggan, which allow the vehicle to glide smoothly down the hill.

iv) Project Management: Project management members are the core of the team, starting from contributing fundraising ideas, managing schedules on Notion, and budgeting for the competition. Members are engaged in a variety of tasks to operate the team efficiently.

v) Spirit: The Spirit subteam is the energy of the entire team. Team members create team slogans and competition choreographies, draw and color palettes, engage in photography and videography, contribute to costume-making, represent the university’s personality, and keep the team alive.

Commitment: During the off-season period (typically February - May), the team expects regular members to spend a minimum of 1-2 hours per week. However, as competition nears, members may spend 2-3 hours per week or more depending on the tasks assigned by team leads and individual schedules. Team Leads are expected to spend much more time on the team.

Registration: Members may sign up by contacting us via one or more of the social media platforms mentioned above. They can also contact through the team email (munconcretetoboggan@gmail.com), through the Captain’s email (ccullwhitten@mun.ca), or the Project Lead’s email (nanovera@mun.ca).
