Where we are

Positioned at a unique global crossroads, just a three-hour flight from Toronto and five hours from London, England, Memorial University sits where continents and cultures meet. Our strategic location fosters a distinctly cosmopolitan community that blends North American innovation with deep European heritage.
This setting is more than inspiring; it is a critical research asset. Across all our locations, Newfoundland and Labrador’s rugged coastline, unique marine ecosystems, and the famed “iceberg alley” create an unparalleled natural laboratory for ocean sciences, engineering, geology, folklore, and more. Our proximity to the Atlantic shapes who we are—informing our research, our identity, and our sense of place. It is, truly, an inspiring place to challenge assumptions and broaden the mind.
St. John’s Campus
Memorial's largest campus is located in the heart of Newfoundland and Labrador’s capital city—a vibrant, urban centre known for its colourful row houses, thriving arts scene, and warm, welcoming culture. Here, students are steps away from ocean vistas, coastal trails, and downtown cafés. Just minutes from the rugged coastline and sweeping views of the North Atlantic, the St. John’s Campus benefits immeasurably from being part of a place that is both modern and historic.
Marine Institute
Also located in St. John’s, the Marine Institute is one of the world’s most respected centres for marine and ocean-related education and research. Situated near one of the busiest working harbours in the Atlantic region, the Marine Institute is tightly connected to global shipping routes, offshore industries, and the North Atlantic’s unique marine environments. Its location provides unparalleled access to ships, simulators, ROVs, and real-world coastal and ocean conditions—making it a true training ground for innovation in marine technology, fisheries, ocean mapping, and maritime safety.
Grenfell Campus
On the west coast of Newfoundland, Grenfell Campus is rooted in the city of Corner Brook—an area defined by dramatic landscapes, creative energy, and four-season adventure. Nestled among mountains, forests, and the Bay of Islands, Grenfell offers immediate access to world-class skiing, hiking, and outdoor exploration. Its location also fuels academic strength in fine arts, environmental policy, sustainability, and natural resource management. This is a campus where nature and culture intersect daily, creating a close-knit learning environment inspired by its surroundings.
Labrador Campus
Located in the heart of the Arctic and Subarctic, you'll find Memorial’s newest campus, Labrador Campus, in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Labrador. Surrounded by boreal forest, immense river systems, and northern ecosystems, the area offers a mix of wilderness adventure, breathtaking natural landscapes, and city-like amenities. Its location enables critical work in Arctic and Subarctic studies through place-based, northern-focused, and Indigenous-led education and research opportunities in Labrador and across the North. Here, the land itself is a teacher.
