Applicants missing required subjects

For general admission to Memorial University, applicants from high school are normally required to complete eligible courses at the Grade 12 or equivalent level in five subject areas:

  1. English
  2. Mathematics
  3. Laboratory science
  4. Social studies or modern/classical language
  5. Elective

Depending on the program for which you are applying, we may be able to consider you for general admission if you are missing a subject area. Note that you will still need to have five eligible courses at the Grade 12 or equivalent level.

The chart below outlines Memorial University’s direct-entry programs (those available for admission directly from high school) and the subject areas at the Grade 12 or equivalent level required for admission to each program.

If you are missing one of the five subject areas and it is not required for the program to which you are applying, we will substitute an eligible course from subject areas 1-4 that is not already being used for general admission. A course can only be counted once toward your overall average for admission.

If you are missing two of the five subject areas and neither is required for the program to which you are applying, please contact special.admissions@mun.ca for advice.

Meeting the subject area requirements

If you are missing one or more required subject areas as outlined above, and/or do not have an eligible course for a substitution, you may wish to consider one of the following:

  • Look into whether you are able to complete the additional course(s) at your high school or under the same curriculum. For eligible courses, please refer to the general admission requirements for your Canadian or international high school curriculum.
  • Complete the required course(s) under the Ontario curriculum online through Virtual High School(VHS), TVO ILC or Ontario Virtual School. Eligible courses in each subject area are outlined here.
  • If you are considering other course providers, please contact admissions@mun.ca for advice.

We will require proof of registration in an eligible course to consider you for early acceptance. This should be uploaded to the admissions portal or sent to admiss.docs@mun.ca.

If you have questions about your eligibility for general admission, please contact us at admissions@mun.ca.
