Photography and Documentary Fiction

Factual Matters: Photographic Documents in Fiction is a single-authored book project that focuses primarily on the use and function of photographic evidence in documentary fiction. In this interdisciplinary study, I turn to photographic documents to explore the ways in which they speak to issues of truth and belief when included in fictional texts.

Through a close reading of exemplary documentary fictions, I argue that photographic evidence, unlike its verbal counterpart, situates accuracy and truth not in claims to objectivity and transparency, but rather in the open interchanges of testimony, argument and imaginative speculation. I conclude that the accuracy attributed to evidential images in fiction resides in their ability to both assert what is known to be so in the real world and to provoke the reader's imagination.

This project is in its final stages of writing.
