GIOVANNA RICCIO

Caryatid Barbie

The Department of English at Memorial University invites you to join us on Thursday, October 10, 2019 at 8 pm for a reading by Giovanna Riccio, author most recently of Plastic's Republic (featuring the Barbie Suite) (2019). The reading will be in the Suncor Energy Hall in the Music Building. All are welcome; admission is free and parking is available in Lot 15B.

In Linda Hutcheon's words, Plastic's Republic tells "the history and aftermath of the 'living doll' known as Barbie" and circulates between "Plato's cave and Plastic's world of appearances." 2019 is Barbie's 60th birthday. Come celebrate this milestone with us in style!

Giovanna Riccio's love of poetry is her inheritance from a gifted autodidact father who penned his own verses. In addition to Plastic's Republic, she is the author of Vittorio (2010) and Strong Bread (2011). Her poems have appeared in national and international publications and in numerous anthologies. Her work has been translated into Italian, French, Spanish, and Romanian.
