Fall Creative Writing Courses

Here is our lineup of Creative Writing Courses for Fall 2021

Information about the Diploma in Creative Writing can be had from the program coordinator Robert Finley at rfinley@mun.ca. All fall courses will be in person, one evening per week from 7-930 p.m.

Engl 3901. Introduction to Creative Writing: Poetry (Tuesdays, 7-9:30, rm. AA3033, in the Arts and Administration Building, Elizabeth Avenue)

The course will be led by Andreae Callanan. English 3901 introduces students to the craft of poetry through reading, analysis, observation, workshopping, and both in-class and take-home poetry writing exercises. We will ask what makes poetry unique among the literary genres, and explore how poetry's vitality, urgency, and (sometimes) clarity can help us make sense of the challenging times in which we live. Admission is limited and portfolio-based; portfolios should include 5-10 pages of writing in any genre, plus a short statement of your writing interests, themes, goals, etc. Portfolios are due in by August 10 to andreae.callanan@mun.ca

English 4920. Creative Writing: Introduction to Screen Writing (Wednesdays, 7-9:30 pm, AA3033, in the Arts and Administration Building, Elizabeth Avenue)

The course will be led by Elisabeth de Mariaffi. This intensive workshop will focus on story architecture and script writing, with the goal of moving students from concept to first draft (either a complete short film or a partial feature) by the end of the semester, while comparing ways of thinking about craft and looking at select examples, and using writing exercises and assignments as hands-on practice. Admission to the course is by way of a short writing portfolio which should include either 5 pages of a script, OR a 5 page treatment, OR 5 pages of fiction. Please also include a paragraph bio on your writing experience thus far. Portfolios are due by August 10 to edemariaffi@mun.ca

Engl 7205. The Podcast (Mondays, 7-9:30 pm. AA3033, in the Arts and Administration Building, Elizabeth Avenue)

The course will be led by Angela Antle. (English 7205: The Podcast is available on a first come first served basis to students enrolled in graduate studies with the Department of English at Memorial. If there are spaces open in the course after graduate registration is complete, these may be made available on the basis of portfolio admission. If you would like to be placed on the waiting list for possible portfolio admission to this workshop please contact Robert Finley at rfinley@mun.ca .) Engl 7205: The Podcast is a workshop-based course during which we will experiment with recorded sound to create new forms of narrative. Students will have the opportunity to make individual and collectively written radio drama, creative non-fiction sound essays, audio interviews, and sound art. Students will present audio art projects for peer critique each week and we will critique current and contemporary podcasts and sound projects. We will explore the power of the human voice when telling a story, the intimacy of the earbud, found sound, the spontaneity and immediacy of the spoken word, and the construction of soundscapes to enhance contemporary narrative.
