FAQs about scholarships and awards

How do I qualify for the Dean's List?

You need to take at least nine courses in two semesters of the academic year and you need to have an average of 80% over those courses. You must have at least 7 A's. And you must take at least six SCIENCE courses.

You should read the offical regulations on the Faculty of Science web pages.

Do I need to apply to be on the Dean's List?

Generally, no!

The Dean of Science Office determines who is on the List.  If you believe that you may be left off the List because of some exceptional circumstances, you should contact our Advising Office and we will discuss the merits of your case with you.

What scholarships are available in the department for undergraduates?

A number of scholarships, bursaries and prizes are awarded each year to undergraduates in the Biochemistry Department.  These fall into two broad categories. The first category includes scholarships and awards that are restricted to students in a Biochemistry program The other category are Faculty of Science or University wide scholarships

A list of scholarships, bursaries and awards that are available only to biochemistry students can be found on our  Department of Biochemistry Undergraduate Scholarships page.

The University Calendar lists all of the scholarships and awards that are awarded to students in the Faculty of Science and University-wide awards that are not specific to an academic discipline.

How do I apply for scholarships awarded by the Department of Biochemistry?

You don't!

Each year, the department reviews the eligible candidates for each scholarship and nominates the one who best meets the criteria for the award of the scholarship.

Students who wish to be considered for those scholarships that are restricted to honours students should ensure that they have declared honours standing by September 01 each year.

How do I apply for Faculty of Science or University-wide scholarships?

The answer is: it depends!

In some cases, you may need to apply for a particular scholarship or award.  If you think you might be eligible for one of these, then you should contact the Dean of Science office (for Faculty of Science scholarships) or the Scholarships office (for University-wide scholarships).  They will be able to tell you what the application process is and when it happens.

You can find more information about the application process for University Wide scholarships here.

In many other cases, the answer is still: you don't!

For some University-wide, the Scholarships office will determine who is the best candidate for the award.

However, each year, the department does get asked to submit nominations for a number of Faculty of Science or University-wide awards.  Many of these awards are for students who meet specific criteria, such as:

  • involved in extracurricular activities
  • participate in varsity athletics
  • have demonstrated leadership ability
  • have demonstrated financial need

Since the department has no way of knowing which students may be eligible for these awards, it would be helpful for students to self-identify if they are interested in being nominated for a specific award(s).  If you would like to self-identify for consideration for one of these awards, please contact our Advising Office.

Expressing an interest in being nominated does not guarantee that the department will put your name forward as typically only one name is submitted in each case.  You must also be in Scholarship standing in most cases.
