Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship

The Department of Sociology is pleased to announce that Dr. James Baker has been awarded the prestigious Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship. The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program provides funding to the very best postdoctoral applicants, both nationally and internationally, who will positively contribute to the country's economic, social and research-based growth. James completed his PhD in our department under the supervision of now retired Honorary Research Professor Dr. Stephen Riggins. Under the supervision of eminent race and ethnicity scholar Dr. Victor Satzewich, McMaster University, James' will investigate the experiences of racism among refugee youth in St. John's and Hamilton. In addition to his Banting Award, he has also received a SSHRC grant to examine white post-secondary youths' view towards Canada's response to the Syrian Crisis as well as their observations of racism in St. John's and Hamilton.
