The Music of Our Burnished Axes

The Music of Our Burnished Axes: New Recordings of Woods Songs and Recitations from Newfoundland and Labrador (2021) features 21 new recordings of previously unrecorded locally-composed woods songs, tunes, and recitations, performed by some of the province’s finest musicians, including the Swinging Belles, Rube & Rake, Sherry Ryan, Shirley Montague, Jim Payne, Aaron Collis, Mark Manning, LadyLike, Sherman Downey, Daniel Payne, Stephanie Payne, Dave Paddon, The Cormiers, and more.

The accompanying 40-page booklet includes an account of lumbering and logging on both the island of Newfoundland and in Labrador as context for a discussion of the emergence of a local, vibrant, and little-known woods-song tradition. Also included are archival photographs and background notes for each track.

This CD is a companion to the book The Music of Our Burnished Axes: Songs and Stories of the Woods Workers of Newfoundland and Labrador (2018). With your purchase of the CD (“all tracks” download option or hard copy) comes a 40% discount on the book.
