Memorial University’s Discipline of Family Medicine is pleased to offer Enhanced Skills training in Emergency Medicine (EM). Our program is looking for residents who have demonstrated themselves to be hard-working, professional, and teachable during their Family Medicine residency. We are committed to producing physicians who are procedurally excellent and possess the critical thinking skills to resuscitate any patient in any emergency department across the country. During training, we prioritize wellness and resilience to ensure that learners gain the maximum benefit from our rigorous academic schedule.

In the absence of a local RCPSC emergency medicine program, our residents assume senior roles within the emergency department, without competition for clinical exposure or procedural opportunities. As a result, our learners are always first in line for critical resuscitations, procedures, and the full spectrum of emergency cases—from common complaints to rare and complex cases. Over the course of this intensive year, residents take on increasing responsibility, including departmental leadership, EMS triage, and mentorship of junior learners. We boast a large group of engaged faculty with varied special interests within the practice of emergency medicine including advanced PoCUS, simulation, pre-hospital medicine, EDI-AR, geriatrics, research, and QI. Our simulation and procedural skills curriculum will allow our residents to feel comfortable in dealing with the highest acuity patients immediately upon graduation. Residents and staff share regular social events including a year-end resident retreat to promote learner well-being.

Successful completion of this twelve-month residency program will lead to eligibility to sit the Examination of Added Competence in Emergency Medicine. Candidates who successfully complete both the residency program and the examination will be awarded a Certificate of Added Competency (CAC) by the College of Family Physicians of Canada.
