Becoming an authorized driver
Any individual who is required or may need to operate the university fleet must be approved by Facilities Management in advance of operation.
To obtain approval to operate the university fleet, please complete and submit an Application for Driving Privileges to Facilities Management.
Please note, this form includes consent for Facilities Management to obtain a driver's abstract from the Department of Motor Registration on behalf of the applicant. The collection of driver abstracts is a requirement under the Carrier Safety Regulations of the Highway Traffic Act 1160/96.
To be eligible for approval as an authorized operator of the university fleet, the following operator qualification criteria must be met:
- be an authorized university member (see definitions page)
- have a valid driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle, including the required class of license appropriate to the fleet type
- have fewer than seven demerit points and fewer than three moving traffic violations during a five-year driving history
- submission of an Application for Driving Privileges approved by the unit head
- completion of the online, self-paced driver awareness training program specified by Facilities Management.
Upon receiving the Application for Driving Privileges form and confirming the eligibility criteria is met, Facilities Management will provide the individual with a link to the driver awareness training program. Completing this training is mandatory before obtaining approval status.
Once the training is completed, Facilities Management will inform both the employee and the department of approval status. If approved, the employee will be issued a key fob that allows them to operate a fleet unit.
Please reference the Procedure for the Authorization of Operator Privileges for more information.
