Celebrating 50 years of engineering education
The Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science is celebrating 50 years of engineering education in the province and we want you to help us celebrate.
A main networking event on Aug. 9 at the Emera Innovation Centre, Signal Hill campus will kick off the celebrations with guest speaker Canadian space legend Dr. Roberta Bondar. Dr. Bondar is Canada’s first female astronaut and the first neurologist in space. Her talk will inspire you and be one you don't want to miss.
On Saturday, Aug. 10, we are hosting an open house for alumni and their families and for the general public. The event will be held at the S.J. Carew (Engineering) Building and will feature interactive tours and interesting exhibitors. It’ll be fun for the whole family.
Our history
In 1969, founding Dean, Dr. Angus Bruneau, announced a new full engineering degree program at Memorial. The first class of students entered a year of general studies in the Fall of 1968 and then began the new engineering program in the Fall of 1969. The first engineering class began, along with the first offering of a master of engineering degree in ocean engineering. In 1974, Memorial’s first class of 76 students graduated with a degree of bachelor of engineering in electrical, mechanical or civil engineering.
The faculty has a long, proud history of excellence in engineering education and research starting in 1930 with a three-year engineering diploma program of 13 students. In 1949 Memorial University College became a full-fledged university and was renamed Memorial University of Newfoundland. The engineering department became the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science. Professor Stanley J. Carew was the first dean.
“We are proud of the contributions of engineering to the province and our past accomplishments that have placed us among the premier engineering schools in Canada,” said Dr. Greg Naterer, dean of engineering and applied science. “We look forward to celebrating our 50th anniversary with you.”
