Ph.D candidate Caroline Gini at Sea mapping radioactive waste

Jun 27th, 2025

Our Ph.D. candidate Caroline Gini is currently at sea aboard a research vessel, leading the mapping effort on a mission to locate and study barrels of radioactive waste dumped off the coast of Brest, France at depths exceeding 4,000 meters. These barrels were deposited between the 1960s and 1980s, and this expedition aims to better understand their distribution and condition on the seafloor.

Caroline was invited to take on a leadership role in this important international project and is supported by her supervisor, Dr. John Jamieson, and the Jamieson Marine Geology Laboratory.

We’re incredibly proud of Caroline and excited to follow her progress on this critical work!
