Bridging scientific and Inuit Knowledge to inform changing coastal rivers and coastal ecosystem management
Highlighted in most recent Tula Foundation Newsletter -
A new collaborative project, funded by the North American Partnership on Environmental Community Action, mapping changing Nunatsiavut coastal rivers through regional data analysis directed and informed by local Inuit Knowledge. Led by Sue Ziegler, this project is a collaboration among local knowledge experts from all five Nunatsiavut communities, Nunatsiavut Government, and researchers at the Hakai Institute, Memorial, Dalhousie, and Queen’s Universities.
We anticipate outcomes including community specific monitoring methods designed to be sustainable for the long-term, and a river watershed classification that enables communities within and outside Nunatsiavut to design effective monitoring to address local concerns such as river condition impacts on migrating fish populations (e.g. char and salmon), coastal ecosystem productivity, and sea ice change.
