Ryan's Fancy: What a Time Volume 2
Members of the renowned Irish-Newfoundland band, Ryan’s Fancy, Irishmen Fergus O’Byrne, Denis Ryan, and Dermot O’Reilly, settled in St. John’s in 1971 and went on to national and international acclaim, releasing 13 albums and starring in several acclaimed CBC television productions before disbanding in 1983 so that the members could pursue individual projects.
Through their television appearances, live performances, and recordings, Ryan’s Fancy laid the foundation for a new generation of traditional musicians and brought Newfoundland traditional music to international audiences. In 2004 they received the East Coast Music Awards’ Dr. Helen Creighton Lifetime Achievement Award.
What a Time, Volume 2 is a co-production of MMaP and SingSong Inc. The CD features the re-release of 22 songs from Ryan’s Fancy’s vast repertoire of Irish and Newfoundland songs, digitized and remastered by Spencer Crewe, with a liner note essay by Dr. Holly Everett, Associate Professor in the Department of Folklore and the School of Music, and song notes by Dr. Meghan Forsyth.
