Student Winners at GAC-NL Meeting

The Geological Association of Canada – Newfoundland and Labrador Section (GAC-NL) Annual Technical Meeting was held at the Johnston Geocentre, St. John’s from February 19th to 20th, 2018. This meeting included presentations from industry, academia and government, highlighting the remarkable geoscience research being carried out in the province. As always, there was a strong representation from students at Memorial University, with 15 graduate and undergraduate students presenting their research at the meeting. In order to honour the exceptional work of these students, GAC-NL decided to present awards to the best student presentations. Given the high quality of all the students work, this led to a difficult judging process, but the following four students were selected as winners of these awards:

  • Andrew Blagdon for his presentation entitled “Geophysical Investigation of the Gullbridge Tailings Facility, Central Newfoundland” (co-author Alison Leitch)
  • Kirsten Costello for her presentation entitled “Metamorphic Evolution of the Low Pressure Metapelites in the Escoumins Supracrustal Belt, Southern Central Grenville Province, Québec” (co-author Aphrodite Indares)
  • Christian Gaviria for his presentation entitled “Developing an Algorithm for Predicting Stream Dissolved Organic Carbon Concentrations from UV-Visible Light Absorbance” (co-authors Allison Myers-Pigg and Susan Ziegler)
  • Leanne Fisher-Power for her presentation entitled “Investigating the influence of soil organic matter and Fe/Al-oxyhydroxides on nanoscale titanium dioxide (nTiO2) transport in natural sediment” (co-author Tao Cheng)

Congratulations to the winners and to all the students who presented at this meeting. The abstracts for all presentations can be found in an upcoming issue of Atlantic geology.
