Graduate Seminars

Graduate Seminar Series

The Graduate Seminar Series is a great opportunity for Earth Sciences graduate students to share their research, get helpful feedback, and connect with others in the field.

Seminars take place during the Fall and Winter terms only. They do not run during holidays or exam periods, and there are no seminars in the Spring/Summer term due to low attendance.

M.Sc. Students

M.Sc. students are required to give two seminar presentations during their program: a Proposal Seminar and an Exit Seminar.

  1. Proposal Seminar

    • To be completed within your first year (normally within the first six months of your program) after submitting your written thesis proposal.

    •  Aim for a talk that is 7-10 minutes in length allowing additional time at the end for questions

    • Your seminar should focus on the background, methods, approaches, and potential applications of your research - not the results.

    • Be sure to keep your talk clear and accessible for a general Earth Sciences audience.

  2. Exit Seminar

    • To be completed near the end of your program, usually before submitting your thesis for examination.

    • Aim for a talk that is 15-20 minutes, allowing additional time at the end for any questions.

Ph.D. Students

Ph.D. students give one main Graduate Seminar that provides an overview of your research and key results.

  • To be completed before your thesis research and writing are complete.

  • Aim for a talk that is About 20-25 minutes, allowing additional time at the end for questions.

  • Audience feedback is welcome but considered non-binding recommendations.

  •  Final results of your research will be formally presented during your Ph.D. Thesis Defense, which takes place after the successful examination of your written thesis.
