GAC-NL Annual Fall Field Trip - Valentine Lake Gold Mine 2025
Registration for the 2025 GAC NL fall fieldtrip is now open. This year’s field trip will be the first organized by GAC-NL at the Valentine Lake mine site. It is planned for 3 days (1 day site visit) between Friday, September 26th to Sunday September 28th, and will be led by Nicholas Capps, director of exploration, and Dylan Abbott of Equinox Gold, both of which possess extensive knowledge of the area.
Gold exploration in Newfoundland has been booming for several years and with the Valentine Lake mine officially starting production this year this marks a significant milestone in the story of gold exploration in Newfoundland; the field trip will be an excellent opportunity to visit the new mine site. It will include visits to the Marathon and Leprechaun pits, a mill operations tour, and a visit to the core shack. Geologically speaking, there will be chances to examine the Valentine Lake Shear Zone, including the Rogerson Lake Conglomerate and the Valentine Lake Intrusive Complex, as well as the relationship between quartz monzonite and mafic dikes, and of course the most important part: gold mineralization!
The cost is $150 for students and $400 for non-students. Accommodations and meals will be at the Mount Peyton Hotel in Grand Falls-Windsor. Transportation from St. John’s to Grand-Falls Windsor on the 26th and return to St John’s on the 28th is included, as well as transportation from Grand-Falls Windsor to the mine site and back on September 27th.
