November 21, 12-1pm

Talk: Metals, Vapours, and Volcanoes

Who: Professor Anthony Williams-Jones, McGill University (2025 Howard Street Robinson Medalist)

Where: Earth Sciences Building 4065

---

In this presentatio, Dr. Anthony Williams-Jones challenges long-standing assumptions about metal transport in hydrothermal systems. Traditionally attributed to aqueous liquids, new evidence sugges that aqueous vapour may play a dominat role in forming porphry and epithermal deposits. Drawing on volcanic gas data, fluid includions, and experiments, he demonstrates that vapour can carry signinifcant concentrations of metals like Cu, Mo, Ag,and Au, particularly in presece of HCI and water vapour. This talk revives and modernizes early theories dating back to Georgius Agricold (1556), offering a new model for ore formation driven by vapour-dominated processes.
