Fairlead Social Impact Fund

Social finance and impact investing are powerful tools that help Social Purpose Organizations strengthen and diversify their revenue, supporting long-term financial sustainability.

In 2025, the Centre for Social Enterprise launched the Fairlead Social Impact Fund to support investment in local social enterprises and community organizations across Newfoundland and Labrador.

Fairlead is the first student-managed social impact fund based at a Canadian university. It’s a key part of the Centre’s Impact Investing Fellowship, giving students the opportunity to make real investment decisions that drive positive social, cultural, and environmental change.

Managed by the Centre for Social Enterprise and guided by an Investment Committee and faculty mentors, Fairlead combines hands-on learning with real-world impact, connecting students to the communities they serve.

Fairlead is a nautical term for a device that guides and stabilizes ropes, ensuring smooth navigation and reducing friction. This name reflects the program’s role in helping entrepreneurs navigate complex challenges with clarity, support, and confidence, steering them toward meaningful social and financial outcomes. It is also a nod to Memorial’s deep connection to the ocean.
