Dr. April Manuel, along with colleagues from the Heart and Stroke Foundation, joined Health and Community Services Minister Susan Sullivan for a proclamation signing declaring February as Heart Month.

February is Heart Month and presents an opportunity to highlight the critical role healthy living plays in the prevention and management of all chronic diseases, including heart disease and stroke.

The focus of Heart Month is to create awareness of the two major risk factors of heart disease and stroke.

Dr. Manuel, a faculty member in the School of Nursing, has a particular interest in heart health.

With a background in cardiovascular nursing, she chose to study the experience of people who live with arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC), a deadly genetic heart condition that can cause sudden death.

She has helped launch the student chapter of the Heart on Stroke Foundation at Memorial and has spearheaded student involvement in the greater community activities of the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
