Biography - Kevin Redmond

Kevin Redmond has taught k – 12 physical education in the public school system for 30 years, with the last 25 years being at the high school level. While teaching at Gonzaga High School, Kevin was heavily involved in high school curriculum development and support.


Professional Work: Newfoundland & Labrador Department of Education:

  • 2003/04 - 2100/2101 Curriculum Development Working Group
    Writing four column spreads for curriculum guides, writing outcomes, suggested activities to meet these outcomes and the creation of matching assessment strategies
  • 2004/05 - 2100/2101 Pilot School
    Testing what was written, curriculum guide and resources, evaluating same and making changes to reflect desired outcomes
  • 2005 - Working group for assessment and selection of teacher resources for PE 2100/01
    Reviewing a wide sampling of potential teacher resources, evaluating strengths, weakness and potential value to teachers of each resource before collaboratively identifying a merit based priorized listing of resources

    Offering original concept of lesson plans for activities that may be "outside the box" for some teachers as a means to support and encourage teachers to diversify their PE programs especially in the mandatory outdoor component of the new PE 3100/01 curriculum. With the physical education program specialist write the proposal for the PE 3100/01Teacher Resource
  • 2006/07 - NL Department of Education project leader and core writer for Outdoor Activity Teacher Resource (600+ pgs)
    With the physical education program specialist identify final table of contents and select contributors. Design templates, supervise and support contributors including timelines, expectations, and quality of work
  • 2006/07 - Steering Committee for development of Safety Guidelines for outdoor Activities in Physical Education
    Providing direction to Mr. Gary Corbett, Sangar South Consulting Inc. in the writing of and preliminary feedback/approval of direction for safety guidelines for outdoor activities in physical education
  • 2006/07 - Development team for Senior High Physical Education Student Resource (Text)
    Reviewing Ontario's/Thompson Education Publishing Healthy Active Living Text, identifying what was applicable to support NL PE program, recommending inclusions, deletions, material requiring manipulation and following this process through to completion of the final current of Active for Life

    Contributor of a number of images from personal stock image bank as well as some text and text manipulation including profiles and outdoor activities theme portion of text

    Further to being a part of the steering committee, provided ongoing support to Mr. Gary Corbett in his queries for information and clarification throughout the writing of the safety guidelines

Kevin Redmond as an educator has maintained a long time interest in outdoor activities and photography. As a freelance writer and award winning photographer, he is widely published primarily throughout North America in tourism promotion, adventure gear manufacturer's product promotion and outdoor oriented media such as magazines, calendars and books.

Books to his credit include: Canyons Coves and Coastal Waters: Choice Canoe and Kayak Routes of Newfoundland and Labrador (Breakwater Books 1996); A Guide to Sea Kayaking Newfoundland and Labrador (Nimbus 2003); Landscapes and Legacies: Parks, Natural Areas and Historic Sites of Newfoundland and Labrador (Creative 2004); Quality Lesson Plans for Outdoor Education (Human Kinetics 2010), Iceberg Alley; a journal of nature's most awesome migration (Flanker Press 2010).

He has published over 1,000 images, 75 book/magazine covers and approximately 100 articles. His work has appeared in and on the covers of such magazines/calendars as: Sea Kayaker, Canoe & Kayak, Wyman Publishing, KANAWA, Saltscapes, Downhomer, Newfoundland Sportsman, Outdoor Sportsman and Wavelength magazine. Clients have included: Parks Canada, Coast Guard, NL Tourism, Paddle Canada, Seaward Kayaks, Nova Craft Canoes, Mustang, Seair Sports and Smithsonian Institute to name a few. In his spare time his interests include salmon fishing, skiing (downhill and cross country), paddling (canoe and kayak), hiking, golf and adventure travel.
