Meet Dr. Alison Malcom

Dr. Alison Malcolm hails from Burnaby, B.C. where she completed a B.Sc. (hons) in Geophysics from the University of British Columbia. She also holds a Ph.D. in Geophysics from the Colorado School of Mines.

After her studies, Dr. Malcolm held post-doctoral fellowships with the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications, University of Minnesota, and at Utrecht University, The Netherlands. Prior to coming to Memorial she was an assistant professor of Geophysics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

She is currently an associate professor with the Department of Earth Sciences and the Chevron Chair in Reservoir Characterization, specializing in seismic imaging and wave propagation. Dr. Malcolm is now working on a joint program with math and geoscience related to offshore oil and gas.

A mom to two small children, she jumped at the opportunity to move back to Canada, to a less crowded place than the Cambridge/Boston area.

“The position I have here has excellent funding opportunities, making it easier to run a research program than in the U.S.,” she said. “I really like it here! It’s beautiful and my first winter wasn’t so bad. The people are really friendly and I’ve already had the chance to work with some great students.”

Dr. Malcolm is currently funded by Chevron and the Research and Development Corporation of Newfoundland and Labrador. You can find out more about her work at http://www.esd.mun.ca/~amalcolm.
