Game plan
Through Memorial’s MBA program, Farnaz Vaezi is preparing to combine her background in finance with her passion for badminton to create new sport and wellness opportunities for families.
Where are you from?
I’m originally from Iran and moved to Canada to pursue higher education and create better opportunities for myself and my family. St. John’s has been a calm, safe, and welcoming city. I truly enjoy its natural beauty, the Atlantic coastline, and the strong sense of community here.
What do you enjoy doing for fun?
I’m passionate about badminton and have been playing professionally for years. In addition to my achievements in Iran, I’ve earned multiple championship titles here in St. John’s and the province of Newfoundland. I strive to manage my time effectively to continue excelling in this sport while also succeeding in my academic journey, which is closely aligned with my financial background. I also spend quality time with my family to create a joyful, healthy, and supportive environment—we enjoy fun activities together like games, nature walks, and movie nights.
Why did you decide to pursue a graduate degree?
After many years of professional experience in accounting and completing various management certifications and programs in my home country, I realized that to grow further—especially in the international landscape—I needed to refresh and expand my managerial knowledge in a new and dynamic environment. Studying in Canada, particularly at a globally respected university, has given me the opportunity to update my previous learning, explore new approaches to leadership and strategy, and strengthen my skills in a diverse and global context.
Why did you choose Memorial University for your graduate studies?
Although I had offers from other universities, after thorough research and reviewing program structures, rankings, international support, and alumni feedback, I knew that Memorial University was the right fit for me. The Master of Business Administration program here is practical and internationally oriented, allowing me to integrate my professional experience with advanced business knowledge. The multicultural environment and opportunity to collaborate with students from around the world have broadened my global business perspective. Choosing Memorial has been a thoughtful and strategic decision for my future.
How would you describe your experience as a graduate student at Memorial?
My experience at Memorial has been both enriching and transformative. The university provides a supportive learning environment where I’ve engaged with knowledgeable professors and worked on real-world projects with peers from diverse backgrounds. These experiences have not only advanced my academic knowledge but also enhanced my self-confidence and interpersonal skills.
What scholarships or awards have you received?
I’m honored to have received scholarships administered by the School of Graduate Studies. This award has significantly eased the financial pressure of studying full-time as an international student and have also motivated me to continue giving my best throughout the program.
Have you faced any challenges in life that you’ve overcome to pursue graduate studies?
Yes—immigrating from my home country, adapting to a new language and culture, and studying full-time in a rigorous academic environment have all been challenging. As a mother of two children, I’ve worked hard to balance my family responsibilities with my academic and professional goals. Securing visas for my husband and children and maintaining my professional standing as a certified badminton coach and referee have also required determination and resilience. Overcoming these obstacles has made me stronger and more focused.
What industry or career path are you interested in pursuing after graduation?
I’m interested in financial management, risk analysis, and strategic business planning. After graduation, I hope to work in roles that involve strategic financial decision-making—especially in organizations that value innovation, sustainability, and international growth.
In parallel, I’m also passionate about developing my own business in the field of sports—specifically in badminton training, promoting healthy lifestyles, and supporting mothers and children in accessing fitness opportunities. I aim to bridge my expertise in finance with my love for sports to create value in both areas.
What advice would you give to current or future graduate students?
Be flexible and persistent. Graduate studies can be challenging, but every difficulty is also an opportunity to grow. Take full advantage of university resources, build meaningful relationships with professors and peers, and strive to maintain a healthy balance between academic and personal life.
Remember—progress often begins with small, consistent steps.
Anything else you would like to share?
I’m truly grateful for the opportunity to study at Memorial University and for the scholarships that recognized my efforts. I hope my journey inspires others who are navigating immigration, change, or a new beginning—and reminds them that it’s never too late to build a brighter future.
