Memorial Destinations to Explore

Did you know that Memorial consists of six campuses and a variety of other fascinating locations besides? Here are some Memorial spaces and places to visit while in the area. If you are travelling west or to Labrador, be sure to  visit Grenfell campus in Corner Brook, or Labrador campus in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

Marine Institute

The Marine Institute is Canada’s most comprehensive centre for education, training, applied research, and industrial support for the ocean industries and a world-leading centre for ocean-related career education and research. Located at 155 Ridge Road in St. John's, the Marine Institute is a 5-10-minute drive from St. John's campus and well worth the visit.

On August 13 and August 20 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m, the Marine Institute invites you to dive into interactive demonstrations, explore cutting-edge marine technology and learn how the Marine Institute is shaping the future of ocean innovation. Then, treat yourself to some of the best fish and chips in town. Available for purchase in our scenic cafeteria renowned for an expansive view of St. John's and delicious fare, a meal of fish and chips at MI is a hidden culinary gem. Register here.

Memorial University Botanical Garden

Minutes from both St. John's campus and the Marine Institute you will find Memorial's Botanical Garden - the province's premier botanical garden. Our 110 acre property offers 3.5km of nature trails, a large cultivated garden area with multiple themed gardens, a public greenhouse and an alpine house, special events, workshops, public art, camps, and so much more. You can even rent kayaks and enjoy a paddle on Oxen Pond! For more informaiton about the Garden, visit here.

Johnson Geo Centre

If you have walked up Signal Hill, why not explore what's underneath while you are in the area? Discover our planet's incredible history, explore the varied species of corals that live off our coast in the Gardens of the Deep exhibit, learn about the volcanoes, earthquakes, and natural forces that shape the very ground beneath our feet, look to the future with space exploration, and so much more.

Ocean Sciences Centre

Located in beautiful Logy Bay-Middle Cove-Outer Cove, the Ocean Sciences Centre (OSC) is Memorial's cold ocean research facility.

As part of the Faculty of Science, OSC is dedicated to advancing groundbreaking research in key areas, including the North Atlantic fishery, sustainable aquaculture, oceanography, and the ecology, behaviour, and physiology of diverse marine organisms. With cutting-edge laboratories and a prime coastal location, we are uniquely positioned to tackle pressing global challenges such as climate change, marine conservation, and sustainable seafood production. While in the area, visit the Summer Marine Education Program, running from 10:00 am to 4:30 pm from Wednesday to Sunday, rain or shine! There is no admission cost but we do have a donation box available.
