Revised course evaluation process launching for spring 2023 semester

Jun 21st, 2023

In 2021, following Senate’s approval of a new purpose statement for the course evaluation questionnaire, the Special Senate Committee for Evaluating Course and Teaching Effectiveness (ECTE) was established to determine the requirements for a broad university-wide process for the evaluation of courses and teaching. The Senate-endorsed report of the ECTE recommended that the existing questionnaire be replaced with a new evaluation instrument and process. Work is underway to implement a new technology solution for the revised student course feedback instrument, now titled the Course Experience Questionnaire (CEQ), and related processes. The new CEQ will be administered online through a cloud-based enterprise solution known as Blue by Explorance, which will offer students, instructors and administrators improved functionality and user experience over the previous system. Explorance is a Canadian company that offers Blue as a cloud-based solution; a comprehensive approach to automate data-collection for the purposes of course evaluation.

The system is launching for the spring 2023 semester. The CEQ administration period – when the form will be available to students – will be July 24 – Aug. 6. Student completion of the questionnaire is encouraged but not mandatory. Instructors can also encourage student completion if desired.  As project implementation progresses, regular updates will be provided to the university community regarding the process and key implementation dates. The abovementioned report, which provides detailed background on this project, and the updated questionnaire, is available here: https://www.mun.ca/senate/media/production/memorial/administrative/senate/media-library/about/ECTE_report.pdf.
