Teachers on Wheels

Would you like to volunteer to help another adult learn to read and write? If you can read, you can tutor.

Teachers on Wheels will be holding a daylong tutor-training workshop on Saturday, November 26th. Call Tom Dawe for details at 738-3975.

Expectations in the Postion: 

 

1. Tutor Training

 

  • one, six-hour training session 
  • follow-up sessions throughout the year
  • individual assistance to tutors on an on-going basis

 

Purpose:

 

  • to introduce the issue of literacy in St. John's
  • to help tutors understand the role illiteracy plays in the lives of learners
  • to give an understanding of our basic philosophy
  • to give tutors the chance to ask questions, clarify thoughts and decide about making a commitment to Teachers on Wheels

 

2. Learner-Tutor Pair

 

  • 3 hours a week
  • learner and tutor agree on time and place
  • learning plans are developed between student and tutor with ongoing support and review

 

3. Commitment To Teachers on Wheels

 

  • tutors are required to make a minimum commitment of 6 months

 

4. Tutor Workshops

 

  • scheduled on an as-needed basis.
  • to keep in touch with Teachers on Wheels
  • to share ideas, problem solve, and develop creative and functional materials

 

5. Certificate of Conduct

 

  • A clear certificate of conduct from the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary will be required. It is not necessary to obtain this certificate in advance of tutor training.
