Core Clinical Rotations
All undergraduate students gain exposure to emergency medicine through their core rotation. For the 2026-27 academic year, 82 students are scheduled for the emergency medicine rotation. For St. John’s-based learners, time is divided between our two adult emergency departments, the Health Sciences Center and St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital, as well as the Janeway Emergency Room site where learners complete a pediatric emergency medicine component. Learners complete 17 shifts across these three sites and gain experience with a wide variety of emergency department presentations from high-acuity to minor complaints, ranging from children to geriatrics.
In addition to these three primary sites located in St. John’s, the Department of Emergency Medicine also offers rotation placements at a variety of rural ER sites, including sites located in Burin, Goose Bay, Grand Falls, Corner Brook and Gander.
