Nature NL Public Talk: Labrador Night with SmartICE
Join us online or in-person in our theatre for an exciting evening with Nature NL & SmartICE!
SmartICE is a community-based Work Integrated Social Enterprise (WISE) offering climate change adaptation tools and services that integrate Indigenous knowledge of sea ice with monitoring technology. Our information contributes to more informed decisions regarding sea ice travel and supports community economic development. By augmenting local knowledge and supporting traditional sea ice use, SmartICE promotes Indigenous culture, intergenerational learning, and community wellbeing. This talk will focus on SmartICE field operations, youth empowerment and training in documenting local knowledge and mapping, at our Northern Production Centre in Nain, Nunatsiavut.
About SmartICE:
SmartICE is the worldʼs first climate change adaptation tool to integrate traditional knowledge of ice with advanced data acquisition and remote monitoring technology. Our system combines these approaches to provide invaluable, data-driven insights into sea ice thickness and local ice conditions, in near real-time. We embrace a business model that aims to expand opportunities for economic and social development in northern markets while preserving local cultures and lifestyle.
