Winter 2021 Creative Writing Courses

Here are our Creative Writing courses for the Winter 2021 semester. The deadline for portfolio submission is December 1, 2020!

Engl 3903: Creative Writing: Intro to Non-Fiction
Instructor: Lisa Moore. x36lm@mun.ca
Wednesday evenings from 7-9:30

In this seminar course students will be given an opportunity to workshop creative non-fiction essays-in-progress. We will critique original creative non-fiction essays each week, discuss such elements of craft as image, metaphor, composition, voice, and the ways truth, memory and imagination are employed in creative non-fiction. Students will post peer critique on CITL’s Brightspace online platforms and we will meet weekly for Webex class discussion. Students will be required to write 10,000 words of creative non-fiction. Participants will also be reading examples of published creative non-fiction for analysis in terms of style and content. An admission portfolio of 5-10 pages (double spaced) of your best fiction or creative nonfiction writing should be submitted to Lisa at x36lm@mun.ca by December 1.

This is a seminar course where students will be given an opportunity to workshop fiction-in-progress. We will critique original works of fiction each week, discussing elements of craft such as the use of point-of-view, exposition, dialogue, plot, language, and the art of showing rather than telling. Students will post peer critique on CITL’s Brightspace online platforms and we will meet weekly for Webex class discussion. Participants will write 10,000 words of either a novel-in-progress or a collection of short stories. We will also analyze examples of published fiction that illustrate elements of craft discussed in class. An admission portfolio of 5-10 pages (double spaced) of your best fiction or creative nonfiction writing should be submitted to Lisa at x36lm@mun.ca by December 1.
