Nadia Bozak Reading

Acclaimed author Nadia Bozak will be reading from her novel El Niño at the Memorial English Department’s Visiting Authors Series on November 5th at 8 pm at the Suncor Centre (music building).

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Nadia Bozak is the author of the novels Orphan Love and El Niño – the first two parts of her Border Trilogy – and the short story collection Thirteen Shells, forthcoming 2016. Bozak’s stories have appeared in Walrus, Joyland, and Prairie Fire. In addition to being a novelist and short-story writer, Bozak teaches Creative Writing and Comparative Literature at Carleton University in Ottawa.

El Niño tracks the survival of one woman and a young, undocumented migrant as they journey through the no-man’s-land of a remote southwestern desert on the border of Mexico. Honey hasn’t seen her mother, Marianne, in more than two years. She drives deep into the once-prosperous border region of the Oro Desert for a surprise visit, only to discover that Marianne has vanished. Alone in an unforgiving environment populated with hostile locals, she meets Chávez, a young “coyote” or human trafficker, who convinces Honey he knows her mother’s whereabouts and agrees to take her there – for a price.

Praise for El Niño

Now Magazine has said of Bozak’s novel: El Niño has… got a ton of suspense…Bozak’s images of the desert are vivid, and her evocation of the life of the desperadoes is achingly effective.

The Globe and Mail has said: “When El Niño comes together, both on the page and within the reader, the effect is both shocking and powerful, a testimony to Bozak’s skills and daring as a writer.”
