X-Ray Diffraction Facility

The X-ray Crystallography lab contains a Rigaku XtaLAB Synergy-S X-ray diffractometer, equipped with a 4-circle Kappa goniometer, dual PhotonJet sources (Cu and Mo), a HyPix-6000HE Hybrid Photon Counting (HPC) detector and an Oxford Cryosystems 800 Series Cryostream. The HyPix-6000HE detector has direct X-ray photon counting, single pixel point spread function and extremely low noise. The data collection is often completed within hours. Data collection and data processing are done using the latest CrystAlisPro software. Structure solution, refinement and report are done in either OLEX2 or SHELX.

Transmission-mode (in capillaries or Kapton loops) powder diffraction data can also be collected at temperature from 80 to 400 K.

A course on X-ray diffraction is offered at Memorial University (Chem 6394).

This instrument was procured through the CFI JELF program by Drs Francesca Kerton and Christopher Kozak, with additional support from the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador through the Department of Tourism, Culture, Industry and Innovation (TCII).
