Renewed energy

S. M. Tasmeeh Ashan turned his passion for renewable energy into a path for growth, using research, reflection and support from his mentors to shape the next chapter of his career.

Where are you from?

I am from Dhaka, Bangladesh. Since moving to Newfoundland, I have come to appreciate the peaceful environment, the natural beauty of St. John’s, and the warm hospitality of its people. The slower pace of life here has provided a perfect setting for focused academic work and personal growth.

What do you enjoy doing for fun?

In my free time, I enjoy exploring nature, going for walks, and engaging in photography. I also enjoy reading about emerging technologies and current affairs happening all around the world.

Why did you decide to pursue a graduate degree?

I wanted to deepen my expertise in renewable energy and sustainable engineering. Pursuing a graduate degree allows me to build on my foundation and contribute to solving real-world energy challenges through research and innovation.

Why did you choose Memorial University for your graduate studies?

I chose Memorial University because of its strong academic reputation and research. The university’s support for graduate students, experienced faculty, and access to funding opportunities made it an ideal place to pursue my Master of Applied Science in Energy Systems Engineering.

How would you describe your experience as a graduate student at Memorial?

My experience has been both enriching and fulfilling. The collaborative academic environment, accessible faculty, and research-driven culture have allowed me to grow intellectually and professionally. I have also had the opportunity to engage in valuable discussions with professionals from the industry.

I have been honored to receive the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science Scholarship and the Fellow of the School of Graduate Studies Award from Memorial University.

Have you faced any challenges in life that you’ve overcome to pursue graduate studies?

One of the most significant challenges has been relocating far from my home country, leaving behind a stable academic career and family support. Adjusting to a new environment and academic culture took time, but it has also helped me grow stronger and more resilient.

What industry or career path are you interested in pursuing after graduation?

After graduation, I plan to return to either academia, the renewable energy industry or anything related to developing society. My goal is to apply my expertise to real-world energy systems and contribute to sustainable development.

What advice would you give to current or future graduate students?

Stay organized and proactive. Graduate studies offer flexibility, so managing your time effectively and setting realistic goals are crucial. Engage with your peers, seek guidance from your supervisor, and explore tools like simulation software and data analysis to enhance your research impact. Most importantly, take care of your well-being along the way.
