Review of Centre for Innovation in Teaching and Learning
Since its official establishment in 2001, Memorial’s Centre for Innovation in Teaching and Learning (CITL) has been a leader in the delivery of the university’s online education offerings, the use of educational technologies, and the provision of educator development, striving consistently for excellence in these areas.
The unit was renamed in 2016, presenting the opportunity to consider a broader vision for teaching and learning, including responsibility for Memorial’s Teaching and Learning Framework, which supports excellence in teaching and learning in every area of the university.
Dr. Noreen Golfman, provost and vice-president (academic) has initiated a review of CITL. The review will consist of a self-study which will be conducted by the unit over the coming weeks, and will include an on-site visit from an external review panel in late winter.
The panel includes the following individuals who have significant expertise and experience in teaching and learning at universities across Canada: Leslie Reid, Vice-Provost, Teaching and Learning, University of Calgary; Aline Germain-Rutherford, Associate Vice-President, Teaching, Learning and Support Service, University of Ottawa; and Michelle Fach, Director, Open Learning and Education Support, University of Guelph.
“The knowledge, expertise and experience of the excellent team in CITL, coupled with the fresh perspectives from the external review panel will provide the opportunity for an assessment of challenges and opportunities, and highlight the unit’s innovative and high quality work in the areas of online education offerings, educational technologies in teaching and learning, and educator development,” said Dr. Golfman. “I believe that CITL can play a leading role in supporting the university’s overall plan in support of teaching and learning and I look forward to seeing where this review takes us.”
CITL was last reviewed more than 15 years ago. Administrative unit reviews are an important part of Memorial’s planning process. Reviews are conducted periodically across Memorial and many align with leadership, operational and structural changes that are either happening or have the potential to arise. Examples of units that have participated in reviews in recent years include Student Affairs and Services and the Office of the Registrar/Office of Student Recruitment.
