SUBJECT: Memorial University’s Botanical Garden and Northeast Avalon REDB launch the inaugural Food ‘n’ Garden Fair

The Northeast Avalon Regional Economic Development Board (NEAREDB) and Memorial University’s Botanical Garden have assembled a group of like-minded organizations to re-establish the Fall Potato Festival event of the past and broaden its appeal to include a celebration of our premier epicurean and botanical experiences.
The result, a one-day food and garden fair that offers multiple demonstrations, displays and tips on gardening, growing vegetables, herbs and composting, a kid-friendly potato peeling contest and a food tasting experience where four local chefs tempt your taste buds with their culinary creations using ingredients provided by local farmers.
The Fair will continue to honour Ken’s Proudfoot’s legacy as a research scientist, potato breeder, avid gardener and a Friends of the Garden member. Members of Mr. Proudfoot’s family will be in attendance at the event.
“The fall is a wonderful time to celebrate the bounty of food produced in the gardens and farms across this province,” said Liz Klose, director of MUN Botanical Garden. Christine Snow, executive director of NEAREDB, noted that “the event helps to support our communities’ growing interest in locally grown food and garden products and will feature the launch of the 2013/14 Buy Local! Buy Fresh! Avalon Food Map.”
The event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. at MUN Botanical Garden, 306 Mt Scio Road St. John’s.
Admission to the Garden is free for that day; however, donations will be gratefully accepted. To partake of the food tasting experience will cost $20. These passes can be purchased online or in-person at the Garden.
