SUBJECT: Invitation to media: Memorial University's School of Pharmacy partnering with RNC and RCMP for Public Pill Drop

Members of the media are invited to attend the School of Pharmacy’s third annual Public Pill Drop from 1-2 p.m. this Saturday, March 29, at the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) headquarters, 1 Fort Townshend, in St. John’s.
The event concludes Pharmacist Awareness Month (PAM) 2014 – a national event conceived by the Canadian Pharmacists Association and supported by the Pharmacists Association of Newfoundland and Labrador (PANL). The month aims to educate prospective students and the general public about the career options and responsibilities that come with being a pharmacist, as well as the services that pharmacists can offer the community.
Flushing pills down the toilet or throwing them in the trash not only causes chemicals to enter our water and landfills, but can also allow pills to fall into the hands of youth.
The Public Pill Drop is intended as a public service to allow citizens to dispose of their expired medications in a safe way. All identifying information will be removed from pill bottles and persons turning medication in will remain anonymous.
This year’s event is being operated in partnership with the RNC and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). The event will run from 11 a.m.-3 p.m.; media are invited to attend between 1-2 p.m. when representatives from the School of Pharmacy will be available for interviews. Entry will be through the main lobby of the building and the event will take place in the media room.
