SUBJECT: Memorial University’s Teaching and Learning Community website receives international media recognition

DATE: October 25, 2012

Memorial University’s Teaching and Learning Community (TLC) website has received a Silver Davey Award for Websites in Teaching and Learning in Education.
Developed by Mount Pearl agency JAC (John Atkins & Co.), who entered Memorial’s site in the awards competition, the agency also won awards for three of their other website projects. The TLC site was created to continue Memorial’s conversation about teaching and learning, which began during the consultation sessions that formed the university’s Teaching and Learning Framework.
The Daveys are international creative awards focused exclusively on honouring outstanding creative work from the best small firms worldwide.
The International Academy of the Visual Arts (IAVA), who oversees the awards, is an invitation-only, member-based organization of leading professionals from various disciplines of the visual arts dedicated to embracing progress and the evolving nature of traditional and interactive media. Their current membership includes an impressive group of representatives from firms such as Coach, Disney, The Ellen Degeneres Show, HBO and Sotheby’s Institute of Art, among others.
More than 4,000 entries were received from small agencies around the world. Entries are judged to evaluate distinction in creative work. In determining gold and silver winners, entries are judged based on a standard of excellence as determined by the IAVA, considering the category entered.
The heart of the site focuses on inspirational or “wow” experiences from both the student and educator perspective. In addition to profiles, the site contains written testimonials from students and educators about their “wow” moment, as well as videos featuring students and educators in conversation about what resonates with them in their own teaching and learning.
Continuous efforts to increase online engagement are planned for the site, including a Facebook and YouTube channel launch in the near future, photo contests and a new video profiling the depth and breadth of Memorial’s Teaching and Learning Community.
