SUBJECT: Marine Institute first in Canada to host International Association of Maritime Universities’ conference

The Marine Institute (MI) of Memorial University will host the International Association of Maritime Universities’ (IAMU) annual conference at the Delta Hotel, St. John’s, from Oct. 15-17.
As the only Canadian member of the international association, MI is proud to host the conference on Canadian soil for the first time.
This year’s theme is Expanding Frontiers – Challenges and Opportunities in Maritime Education and Training.
This Annual General Assembly 13 will continue in the tradition of uniting international students and worldwide university members. Since IAMU was established in 1999, this event has been hosted in various countries throughout the world, including Poland, Korea, Russia, the United States, Ukraine and China.
“As the only Canadian member of IAMU, the Marine Institute is proud to be part of this prestigious group,” said Glenn Blackwood, vice-president, Memorial University (Marine Institute). “Not only is this conference an opportunity for others to explore our province, it is also a chance to showcase how the Marine Institute is actively addressing issues facing the ocean industries by providing quality education, training and research to the maritime sector.”
Mr. Blackwood added: “The IAMU, with the support of the Nippon Foundation, is providing a worldwide network and focus to the leading maritime education and training institutions and has had and will continue to have a very significant impact and leadership role on global co-operation in education and development of the maritime sector.”
The conference will explore topics such as situational awareness; recruitment and retention of seafarers, distance education and technology, participation of women in the marine industry and the new Standards for Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW).
A presidents’ forum will take place during the second day of the conference and will focus on the STCW 2010 Manila Amendments and Global Advancement of Maritime Education and Training (MET).
The conference is enhanced by a visit of the Kruzenshtern, a four-masted Russian tall ship which boasts 56-metre masts and sails that cover 3,640 square metres. This is the second-largest sailing ship in the world and is one of the fastest in its class. The Kruzenshtern is widely regarded as one of the jewels of the Russian sailing fleet and is operated by the Baltic State Fishing Fleet Academy.
The AGA 13 is supported by, Memorial University, Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, the Nippon Foundation, City of St. John’s, Virtual Marine Technology, Kongsberg Maritime Simulation, Destination St. John’s and the Marine Institute.
