SUBJECT: Junior high and senior high school students to compete in regional remotely operated vehicle competition at Marine Institute

Junior high and senior high school students from across the province will convene at the Fisheries and Marine Institute (MI) of Memorial University of Newfoundland for the Marine Advanced Technology Education Centre’s (MATE) remotely operated vehicle (ROV) regional competition.
The junior high MATE ROV Scout competition begins in the Marine Institute flume tank on Friday, May 3, from 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m.
The high school MATE ROV Ranger competition begins with opening ceremonies in the MI gymnasium on Friday, May 3, at 6 p.m. The ROV competition takes place on Saturday, May 4, from 9-4:30 p.m. in the Marine Institute flume tank.
Media and the general public are invited to attend both events.
These competitions are part of the MATE ROV International Competition, which consists of 22 regional contests that take place across Canada, U.S., Hong Kong, Scotland, Japan and Egypt. This year marks the 12th year of this international competition.
Ocean Observing Systems: Launching a New Era of Ocean Science and Discovery is this year’s competition theme. It highlights the role ROVs play in the installation, operation and maintenance of ocean observing systems. It focuses on challenging students to respond to a request for proposals (RFP) from scientists, engineers and technicians at the University of Washington working on the development of a regional, cabled observatory on the Juan de Fuca oceanic plate in the Pacific Northwest.
Students from 20 junior high and senior high schools will have the opportunity to design, build and operate ROVs that can deploy scientific instruments to execute specific tasks defined by MATE.
The top two teams from the high school Ranger event will earn the opportunity to participate in the MATE ROV International Competition at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Washington, from June 20-22. Memorial University’s post-secondary Eastern Edge Robotics team will also join the top Ranger teams at the international competition, competing in a separate class.
The regional competitions are supported by the Hibernia Management and Development Company, Exxon Mobil, Terra Nova, Statoil, the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, Subsea7, Husky Energy, GRI Simulations, AMEC and the Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland.
Junior high schools taking part in the Scout competition include Beaconsfield Junior High, Brother Rice Junior High, Clarenville Middle School, Crescent Collegiate, Frank Roberts Junior High, G.C. Rowe Jr. High School, Hillview Academy, Lewisporte Intermediate, MacDonald Drive Junior High, Mount Pearl Intermediate, Pearce Junior High, St. Francis School, St. Paul’s Junior High School, St. Peter’s Junior High, Villanova Junior High, Botwood Collegiate, Holy Trinity, Leo Burke Academy, Pasadena Academy and St. Mark’s School.
Senior high schools taking part in the Ranger competition include Ascension Collegiate, Belanger Memorial, Booth Memorial High School, Botwood Collegiate, Carbonear Collegiate, Clarenville High School, Corner Brook Regional High, Gonzaga Regional High School, Heritage Collegiate, Holy Spirit High School, Holy Trinity High, Leo Burke Academy, Lewisporte Collegiate, Mount Pearl Senior High, O’Donel High School, Pasadena Academy, Prince of Wales Collegiate, Queen Elizabeth Regional High School, St. Mark’s School and St. Michael's Regional High.
