SUBJECT: Faculty of Business Administration set to celebrate Alumni and Entrepreneur of the Year

Memorial’s Faculty of Business Administration is preparing to celebrate local business leaders at the 27th annual Partners Reception on March 22.
Earl Ludlow, president and chief executive officer of Newfoundland Power Inc. and a Memorial graduate with a bachelor of engineering (1980) and master of business administration (1994), will receive the 2010 Alumni Honour Award in recognition of his ongoing support of the Faculty of Business Administration, exceptional career success and commitment to his community.
Glenn Hickey, president, Hickey Group of Companies, will receive the Gardiner Centre’s 2011 Newfoundland and Labrador Entrepreneur of the Year Award.
The event will also recognize Grant Thornton LLP and Department of Finance, Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, for their commitment to hiring co-op students. 
Dr. Wilfred Zerbe, dean of the Faculty of Business Administration, is looking forward to recognizing these individuals and groups.
 “The relationship between the business community and our faculty is an extremely vital one,” he said.  “Partners is a way to celebrate that relationship and commemorate individuals who are making a difference within our faculty and community.”  
Partners will be held on March 22, 2011, at the Sheraton Hotel Newfoundland. The reception begins at 4:30 p.m., followed by the ceremony at 6 p.m.

Alumni Honour Award
Earl Ludlow
 
Earl Ludlow is president and chief executive officer of Newfoundland Power Inc. He holds a bachelor’s degree in engineering (electrical) and a master of business administration from Memorial University of Newfoundland. Prior to his present position, Mr. Ludlow held progressively senior positions within the Fortis group of companies for the past 28 years, most recently serving as president and chief executive officer of Fortis Properties Corporation; vice-president, operations with FortisAlberta; and senior vice-president with FortisBC. Prior to this, he held the position of vice-president, engineering & operations with Newfoundland Power Inc. and vice-president operations, Maritime Electric Company Ltd.
Mr. Ludlow’s commitment to the community is reflected through his many involvements with local business and community associations. He has completed two three-year terms as a member of Memorial University’s Board of Regents, and has chaired and contributed to several committees regulating and overseeing university operations. He is also highly involved in cancer care in the province, most recently serving as chairman of the $3.1 million capital campaign, Priority – The Campaign for Cancer Care.
Mr. Ludlow is a member of the Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Newfoundland and Labrador (PEGNL), and a member of the boards of Newfoundland Power Inc., Maritime Electric Company Ltd., the Canadian Electricity Association, the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Care Foundation (serves as chair) and Saint Luke’s Homes. He is also a member of the advisory board of the Faculty of Business Administration.
 
 
Newfoundland and Labrador Entrepreneur of the Year Award
Glenn Hickey
 
Glenn Hickey started his business in 1978 when he converted his parents’ barn in Outer Cove into a four car body shop with one employee. By 1985 The Collision Clinic had a new 8,500 square-foot building and 35 employees. 
A student of the industry, Mr. Hickey was very active on the national and international scene. He was recruited by Auto Repair Management Systems as a consultant and presenter on collision repair management, including the introduction of computerization to the collision repair industry.
He has held posts such as: provincial chairperson and instructor for ICAR technical training, national director for the Society of Collision Repair Specialists, national chairman for the Canadian Collision Industry Forum, and Inductee into the International Collision Industry Hall of Eagles.
Mr. Hickey is owner and president of The Hickey Group, and holds a number of business interests locally which include: Collision Clinic, the 2010 recipient Outstanding Business of the Year; Auto Parts Network, a state of the art auto dismantling and recycling facility; Salvage Services, a salvage management company; Kenmount Development Inc., developers of the new 65- acre Kenmount Business Park and G H Investments, a real estate development company.
Mr. Hickey's ultimate passion for classic cars and custom built hot rods makes him well known among auto enthusiasts and the classic car community. He has won numerous awards for custom body work, paint and design. He is a Rotarian, and still resides in Outer Cove, with his wife Joanne and two daughters Kala and Taylor.
