SUBJECT: Presidential search update; Committee meets with consultants; reviews national, international applications

Memorial University’s Presidential Search Committee held its fourth meeting on Saturday, Sept. 19. The meeting was attended by the full 12-person committee, as well as support staff and two consultants from Janet Wright and Associates, the executive search firm contracted by the university to assist in the initiative.
The position of president and vice-chancellor of Memorial University has been advertised in three university publications – two in Canada and one in the United States – as well as nationally in the Globe and Mail and provincially in The Telegram and The Western Star.
Additionally, the consultants have been actively identifying and communicating with individuals whom the committee felt met the criteria outlined in the Position Profile posted on the Memorial University website (see www.mun.ca/regents/presidential_search/).
The committee reviewed over 40 applications, expressions of interest and nominations. The submissions were international in scope and included documentation from excellent candidates, both male and female, non-Canadians, expatriate Canadians and Canadians from all parts of Canada, including the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador.
“I am very impressed with the high calibre of candidates we are considering,“ said Robert Simmonds, chair of the Presidential Search Committee and of Memorial’s Board of Regents.
“The qualifications and leadership experience they offer are tremendous and we are delighted to see the interest in this position from a wide variety of very capable individuals. This response reflects how well Memorial University is perceived here at home and around the world.”
The committee and consultants plan to continue efforts in the coming months with a view to concluding a successful search by early 2010.
