SUBJECT: Memorial names interim dean to Student Affairs and Services

Memorial University has named an interim dean to the department of Student Affairs and Services.
Dr. Robert Shea, an assistant professor in the Faculty of Education, will take on the role while the search for a permanent candidate is carried out.
Current dean Dr. Lilly Walker will conclude her term on July 31, 2010.
“On behalf of the students of Memorial and the entire university community, I want to thank Dr. Walker for her dedication and hard work during her term as dean of student affairs and services,” said Dr. Gary Kachanoski, president and vice-chancellor.
“She has been a tireless advocate for our students and is largely responsible for the growing national and international reputation that Memorial is developing in the area of student services.”
Dr. Walker was recently recognized by the Canadian Association of College and University Student Services (CACUSS) with its Award of Honour as well as by the Atlantic Association of Colleges and Universities Student Services with its Award of Merit for her significant achievement and distinguished contributions to the development and promotion of student services in the country and the region.
Dr. Shea will commence his duties starting on August 1, 2010.
“I’m pleased to welcome Dr. Shea to the senior executive team. He brings excellent credentials and a background in career development and experiential learning to his new role as acting dean of Student Affairs and Services,” said Dr. Kachanoski . “Helping students fulfill their career and academic goals has been a key focus of his work.”
Dr. Shea has taught in the Faculty of Education since 2006, specializing in the areas of post-secondary and adult education. He is the founding editor of the Canadian Journal of Career Development, with more than 2,100 subscribers from around the world.
From 2001-06, Dr. Shea held the post of director for Memorial’s Career Development and Experiential Learning. There, he was responsible for the leadership and administration of co-operative education services, the Career Planning Centre, the Centre for Career Development and Volunteer Services. He also acted as a liaison to government and industry partners.
Prior to his role as the director of Career Development and Experiential Learning, he was responsible for student employment counseling, career development and recruitment as manager of Student and Career Development for almost a decade. Dr. Shea was involved in several student mentoring initiatives as well as in the supervision of numerous graduate and undergraduate students in thesis, internship and service learning placements.
The Canadian Association of Career Educators and Employers created a national award in Dr. Shea’s name for the achievement of significant research in the field of career development. Dr. Shea himself was awarded the Queen’s Jubilee Medal in 2002 and was named Citizen of the Year in St. John’s in 1998.
Dr. Shea holds a doctorate in higher education leadership from the University of Calgary and a master’s in education administration from Memorial, as well as a bachelor of social work and a bachelor of arts, both from Memorial.
