SUBJECT: Grenfell: Green Books event: The Geography of Hope comes to Newfoundland and Labrador

The following is distributed on behalf of the Environmental Policy Unit, SWGC.
Chris Turner, acclaimed journalist and national bestselling author of The Geography of Hope: A Tour of the World We Need, will visit Sir Wilfred Grenfell College to speak at the Green Books 2010 event.
The event will take place Thursday, March 25, 7:30 p.m. at the GCSU Backlot/Foodcourt.
Green Books, a project of Grenfell’s Environmental Policy Unit, is the province’s first environmental book club. The project aims to start conversations within the local community on cutting edge and highly acclaimed books that explore environmental issues impacting the province. Each year two books are selected and copies of each are donated to all 96 public libraries across the province. In Corner Brook, copies have also been donated to other libraries, such as those in the College of the North Atlantic, Corner Brook Regional High, and Natural Resources Canada. The public can also read copies of the book at local coffee shops such as Brewed Awakening, Thistledown Café and Coleman’s Café.
“We chose The Geography of Hope because it gets beyond the fear of climate change to focus on the real opportunities we have right now, right here in Newfoundland and Labrador, to create a genuinely sustainable society. Chris Turner shows what is possible for our communities and this is a message of great hope,” said Prof. Angela Carter, who facilitates the development of the EPU and teaches political science and environmental studies at Grenfell College.
“We invite Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to participate in this provincial book club by reading the book and joining us at the event in Corner Brook or on the web at www.greenbooksnl.com,” said Carter. “The event, which is free and open to the public, will include short responses by people from the local community, a book signing, live music by Andrew O’Brien, and art exhibits by Charlotte Jones, Nancy Jacobsen, and Kent Jones.”
