SUBJECT: Information session to explore the educational opportunities of Second Life

Ann Marie Vaughan, director, Distance Education and Learning Technologies (DELT), and Dr. Gary Gorman, dean, Faculty of Business Administration, Memorial University of Newfoundland, will be hosting an information session (Spotlight event) focused on the educational use of Second Life (SL), a 3-D virtual world entirely created by Second Life users.
SL was launched in 2003 and is an Internet-based virtual world, developed by Linden Research, Inc. SL allows its users, referred to as Residents, to interact with each other. Residents can travel through the SL world, meet other Residents, socialize and even participate in group activities, including commercial transactions and educational experiences. Many universities have taken to offering courses and library services in the SL world.
This spotlight event begins at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 16, 2008, in the Inco Innovation Centre, room IIC-2001 (second floor lecture theatre), on the St. John’s campus of Memorial University of Newfoundland.
The session will showcase some of the support and services available to faculty interested in using Second Life for the enhancement of face-to-face and distance courses at Memorial. Other participants include Marlene Brooks, senior instructional design specialist, DELT; Lyle Wetsch, assistant professor, Faculty of Business Administration.
