SUBJECT: Public forum tackles the future of the marine sector in the Coast of Bays region

Given the changes in the fishery resource, the markets and technology, the future of the marine sector in the Coast of Bays is uncertain. The Leslie Harris Centre of Regional Policy and Development in partnership with the Coast of Bays Corporation presents the public forum, What is the Future of the Marine Sector in the Coast of Bays? on Monday, Oct. 2 at 7 p.m. at the Vancor Motel in Bay d’ Espoir. The forum will encourage discussion on trends – both here at home and abroad – which are affecting the fishing industry, aquaculture and other marine activities, and what is needed to sustain the industry in the Coast of Bays area.
The forum will feature a lecture by Glenn Blackwood, executive director of the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University. Panelists include: Shawn Robinson, director of Aquaculture Development for the Department of
Fisheries and Aquaculture, Government of Newfoundland and Labrador; Don Stewart, mayor of Harbour Breton and Max Taylor, chairman of the Canadian Business Development Corporation for the South Coast.
The public is invited to attend and participate in a dialogue and a question and answer period. A reception will follow.

The Harris Centre
The Leslie Harris Centre of Regional Policy and Development (The Harris Centre) was approved by the Memorial University Board of Regents on September 8, 2004 and announced October 1, 2004. It is named in honour of Memorial University scholar and former president, Dr. Leslie Harris. Dr. Harris exemplifies the contribution of Memorial University to regional policy and development in Newfoundland and Labrador.
The Harris Centre is tasked with coordinating and facilitating the university’s educational, research and outreach activities in the areas of regional policy and development. It works with all faculties and departments within the University and serves as a reliable point of access for all stakeholders seeking to work with the University in activities related to regional policy and development.
Coast of Bays Corporation
The Coast of Bays region is nestled on the south coast of Newfoundland and Labrador Canada, covering an area of approximately 11,292 square km. The total coastline of the region is approximately 1,365 kilometres. In total, the Coast of Bays region is home to 22 communities with populations ranging from 151 to 2,079 people (Statistics Canada, 2001). The Coast of Bays zone has been geographically broken down into three sub regions: Fortune Bay North Shore, Connaigre Peninsula, and the Bay d' Espoir Region.
