SUBJECT: SWGC: Grenfell College to host basketball tournament with goal of recruiting students

DATE: April 3, 2006

CORNER BROOK – A basketball tournament for Grade 9 boys will hopefully mean an increase in applications down the road.

The tournament, being held April 7 and 8 in the Grenfell gym, will see the participation of a number of local junior high school teams. Organizers are hoping this will be an annual event; next year Grade 9 girls’ teams will be added.

“When recruiting, it is advantageous to inform students before they enter high school so that they will know exactly which courses they should take to be ready for university study,” said Dr. Marc Thackray, professor of English and coach of the Provincial Junior High Grade 9 boys basketball team.

In addition to recruiting future Grenfell students, the tournament will provide an opportunity for Grenfell to get involved in the community.

“It will introduce the 14-year-olds to the college and its facilities as well as to the college’s summer basketball camps,” said Jason Lanza, co-ordinator of the tournament. Mr. Lanza is an international student who is organizing this competition as one of his SWASP projects. A general science and education student, Mr. Lanza was also a basketball coach at home in the country of Belize.

In addition to Dr. Thackray, Mr. Lanza is working with Ms. Janice Galliott, wellness educator at Grenfell College. Grenfell is the Corner Brook campus of Memorial University.

Game times are 4 to 10 p.m. on April 7 and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on April 8.

“This is a different way of recruiting students,” said Mr. Lanza. “We believe that by inviting the students to come on campus it will provide them with the chance to see the opportunities Grenfell can offer them in meeting their personal goals. They will be able to see our facilities and inquire about the courses offered at Grenfell.”
