This scholarship is established in memory of David G. Smith by family and friends.

Mr. Smith was a passionate music educator and mentor who inspired many young musicians during his lifelong music career. He created successful programs in the various schools he taught in and was an active member of the music community. He co-founded the Jazz East Big Band and was instrumental in starting the first Rotary Music Festival here in St. John’s.

Mr. Smith directed a broad spectrum of instrumental programs from the Roman Catholic School Board District Band to the Royal Newfoundland Regiment and played a major role in the development of bands in this province. His legacy in music education profoundly impacted countless students, fostering a love for music and nurturing the next generation of talented musicians and music educators.

The David G. Smith Memorial Scholarship Fund will create a scholarship offered annually at $1000 while the fund is building toward endowment. Once the fund is endowed, a scholarship will be offered annually valued at portion of the income on the endowment. The scholarship will be awarded to a full-time student who has completed the undergraduate Music Degree Program from Memorial University and is entering the Bachelor of Music Education as a 2nd Degree program at Memorial. The student must have participated in band or studied a band instrument during their music degree. Preference is given to a student who has graduated from a high school in Newfoundland and Labrador. The recipient must meet the minimum academic requirements for scholarship standing as defined by Memorial University. The scholarship will be awarded by the Senate Committee on Undergraduate Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards on the recommendation of the Dean, Faculty of Education.
