Celestial Conversations: Update Reveal for "Our Future & Space"
The Geo team has been busy over the past months, updating the "Our Future and Space" exhibit. We are excited to welcome the public to this special evening event to introduce you to the latest updates and celebrate the hard work of all involved. (There's more to come too! Stay tuned!)
Our friends at the St. John's Centre Royal Astronomical Society of Canada will be joining us at the event, and, weather permitting, will have their telescopes on hand for moon viewing after the talks.
Free admission. No registration required.
5:00-7:00pm: Geo Centre exhibits will be open, with free admission
7:00-7:30pm: Mission Memorial: Q&A Panel with Dr. Ivan Booth, Dr. Penny Morrill, and Dr. Hilding Neilson about their research and contributions to the exhibit updates
7:45-8:45pm: Dr. Susan Redmond, "To the stratosphere and beyond: Chasing cosmic clues with balloon-borne telescopes."
Cosmology is the study of the origin and evolution of the Universe over the past 13.8 billion years. Under this umbrella we look at things like the Big Bang, Dark Matter, and Dark Energy. To learn about these topics, we need high quality telescopes that probe different parts of the electro-magnetic spectrum (or different ‘colours’ of light). Balloon-borne telescopes offer a unique compromise between ground and space telescopes in which atmospheric losses and costs are significantly reduced. They fly at altitudes ranging from 30 to 45 km in the stratosphere, which provides a space-like environment but maintains gravity loading, as seen by ground-based instruments. We will look at the successful flights of both the Spider-II payload, which studies the early universe, and the Super-pressure Balloon-borne Imaging Telescope (SuperBIT), which studies Dark Matter, and how they contribute to our understanding of the Universe.
8:50pm: Moon Viewing with the St. John's Centre RASC (weather permitting)
This is event is offered in partnership with the St. John's Centre Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, and with funding from Memorial University’s Public Engagement Accelerator Fund.
Location: Johnson Geo Centre
Date and Time: Tuesday, Jun. 3 at 05:00 PM - 10:00 PM (NDT)
